ALBERT SZENT-GYORGYI Docror OF SCIENCE
Director, Institute of Muscle Research, Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, since 1947; won Nobel Prize in 1937 for work on oxidation and isolation of Vitamin C. Native of Hungary; studied at Budapest and Cambridge Universities; came to the United States in 1947 after a distinguished career of teaching in the Universities of Szeged and Budapest; honorary member of scientific academies throughout the world; American citizen since 1955.
CARL THOMAS ROWAN DOCTOR OF LETTERS
Deputy assistant secretary of state for public affairs, United States De- partment of State, since 1961; author and journalist. Native of Ravenscroft, Tennessee; attended Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State College, Wash- burn University, graduated from Oberlin College in 1947; A.M. in journalism University of Minnesota in 1948; commissioned ensign in Navy V-12 program; served in World War II. Copywriter and reporter, Minneapolis Tribune, 1948-1961; won Sidney Hillman Award for outstanding reporting, 1952; Sigma Delta Chi award for best reporting on segregation cases pending before United States Supreme Court, 1954; foreign correspondent’s medal for articles on India in 1955 and on the Southeast Asia Conference at Bandung in 1956. Oberlin College alumni; Seabury Cone Mastick graduated in 1891, Agnes Warner Mastick in 1892, daughter and sister of other Oberlinians whose family ties to the college go back more than a century. Seabury Mas- tick, studied law at Hastings College of Law, University of California, 1894; Columbia University, 1912-1917; admitted to California bar, 1893, and began practice in his native San Francisco; moved to New York City, 1896; vice president, Warner Chemical Company, 1920-1928; president, Westvaco Chlorine Company, 1922-1927; member of the New York Assembly, 1921- 1922, New York State Senate, 1923-1934; chairman of the committee on taxation and retrenchment and of a special joint committee on taxation, 1924-1932; member or chairman of numerous committees and commissions on taxation, welfare, and agriculture; awarded New York State Conspicuous Service Cross. Developed the “star shell” used in World War I; chairman of the Army and Navy Departments of the YMCA in charge of USO programs in World War IJ. Agnes Warner Mastick, native of McGraw, New York; gave encouragement and support in all her husband’s work; honorary member of the national board of the YWCA; awarded the Oberlin College Alumni Medal in 1954; lifelong teacher in college and civic affairs.
